JACOBI: ORGANIC FRACTILES
“I
saw a friend’s first drawings on scratchboard. I was immediately intrigued.
Drawing with an etching needle or special sharp, spade-shaped nib to scratch
white lines through a prepared ink surface over a clay ground, I found a
medium that was highly satisfying. It gave me the advantage of a full range
of tonality between dark and light values, while still using a tool that felt
comfortable and totally natural.
In
these drawings, I can move the tool over the surface just a small distance,
with the movement of my hand anchored in one place by my wrist. I move the
stylus in short, parallel lines, which usually forms a curved plane. At the
end of each series of strokes, I move my hand and continue, building up the
volumes and directions slowly, deliberately, and yet without a preconceived
plan of how the drawing will emerge. I find this practice exciting in its
abstraction, whereas my other modalities of work are almost always figurative
and determined. These abstractions have a definite pattern of emergence. The
forms are almost always organic, and mimic the process of creating fractals
on a computer. Each form becomes a variable that is added to and developed to
become part of a much more complex whole.”
Kathryn
Jacobi is a classically trained contemporary realist painter, printmaker, and
photographer who has been exhibiting in galleries and museums throughout the
United States, Canada, and Europe.
Kathryn
was born in Manhattan, New York. She attended UCLA, UC Berkeley, and
California State University Northridge, where she received her BA and her MA.
Kathryn presently lives in Santa Monica and has a studio in Los Angeles.

Fire Tornado [via Cacciatore]
An astonished filmmaker is coming to grips with the moment he witnessed one of nature's rarest phenomenons - a tornado comprised entirely of fire- and lived to tell the tale. Chris Tangey had been out in Alice Springs, Australia, scouting locations for a new movie. After finishing the task, he went over to help workers at a cattle station when he was confronted by one of nature's most intimidating spectacles.

These fire tornadoes are a natural rarity, but when they occur they predictably cause significant damage.
A fire tornado, also know as a fire devil, is caused when a column of warm, rising air comes into contact - or causes - a fire on the ground. These fire whirls are known to last for around two minutes on the very rare occasions they take place.
But Mr Tangey found himself mesmerized by the tornado for more than 40 minutes. The 52-year-old said: 'The weather was perfectly still and it was about 25 degrees celsius - it was an entirely uneventful day. 'Then the next thing a man is yelling 'what the hell is that?' and I turned around and saw a 30-metre fire tornado.
'I was about 300-metres away and there was no wind but the tornado sounded like a fighter jet. My jaw just dropped.'
Mr Tangey, who runs Alice Springs Film and Television, in central Australia, described it as a 'once in ten lifetimes experience'.

2. During your lifetime, you will produce enough saliva to fill two
swimming pools. Actually, Saliva is more important than you realize. If
your saliva cannot dissolve something, you cannot taste it.
3. The largest cell in the human body is the female egg and the
smallest is the male sperm. The egg is actually the only cell in the
body that is visible by the naked eye.
4. The strongest muscle in the human body is the tongue and the hardest
bone is the jawbone.
5. Human feet have 52 bones, accounting for one quarter of all the
human body's bones.
6. Feet have 500,000 sweat glands and can produce more than a pint of
sweat a day.
7. The acid in your stomach is strong enough to dissolve razor blades.
The reason it doesn't eat away at your stomach is that the cells of
your stomach wall renew themselves so frequently that you get a new
stomach lining every three to four days.
8. The human lungs contain approximately 2,400 kilometers (1,500 mi) of
airways and 300 to 500 million hollow cavities, having a total surface
area of about 70 square meters, roughly the same area as one side of a
tennis court. Furthermore, if all of the capillaries that surround the
lung cavities were unwound and laid end to end, they would extend for
about 992 kilometers. Also, your left lung is smaller than your right
lung to make room for your heart.
9. Sneezes regularly exceed 100 mph , while coughs clock in at about 60
mph.
10. Your body gives off enough heat in 30 minutes to bring half a
gallon of water to a boil.
11. Your body has enough iron in it to make a nail 3 inches long.
12. Earwax production is necessary for good ear health It protects the
delicate inner ear from bacteria, fungus, dirt and even insects. It

one out of every 2,000 newborn infants has a tooth when they are born

21. The three things pregnant women dream most of during their first
trimester are frogs, worms and potted plants. Scientists have no idea
why this is so, but attribute it to the growing imbalance of hormones

the average person loses 60-100 strands of hair. But don't worry, you
must lose over 50% of your scalp hairs before it is apparent to anyone.
23. The human brain cell can hold 5 times as much information as an
encyclopedia. Your brain uses 20% of the oxygen that enters your
bloodstream, and is itself made up of 80% water. Though it interprets
pain signals from the rest of the body, the brain itself cannot feel
pain.
24. The tooth is the only part of the human body that can't repair
itself.
25. Your eyes are always the same size from birth but your nose and
ears never stop growing.
26. By 60 years of age, 60% of men and 40% of women will snore.

Dog And Cat Grieve Dead Friend Together
There's debate as to whether animals comprehend loss of life the way humans do, but when we see photos like this, the answer seems crystal clear.
Reddit user Kanadka took a photograph of her pets apparently grieving together after the loss of her other dog.
She wrote in a post on Wednesday:
Kanadka's late dog, Mauja.
Her viral photo, viewed more than 75,000 times in just a day, inspired others to come forward with similar experiences.
User seewhatyadidthere commented, "My dog and cat grew up together and my dog recently died. My perfectly healthy cat then died two weeks later. Animals create stronger bonds than people think."

4 Worms In Church [via Mary Calhoun]
Four worms and a lesson to be learned!
A minister decided that a visual demonstration would add
emphasis to his Sunday sermon.
Four worms were placed into four separate
jars.
The first worm was put into a container of alcohol.
The second worm was put into a container of cigarette smoke.
The third worm was put into a container of chocolate syrup.
The fourth worm was put into a container of good clean soil.
At the conclusion of the sermon, the Minister reported the following results:
The first worm in alcohol .
... Dead .
The second worm in cigarette smoke . . .Dead .
Third worm in chocolate syrup . . . .
Dead.
Fourth worm in good clean soil . .
... Alive
So the Minister asked the congregation,
"What did you learn from this demonstration?"
Maxine was sitting in the back, quickly raised her hand and said . . .
"As long as you drink, smoke and eat chocolate, you won't
have worms!"
That pretty much ended the service!
MARRIAGE/MARIJUANA [via Nina Reznick]
For those who haven't heard, Washington State just passed both laws - gay marriage and legalized marijuana.
The fact that gay
marriage and marijuana were legalized on the same day makes perfect biblical
sense because Leviticus 20:13 says, "If a man lies with another man they
should be stoned".
We just hadn't
interpreted it correctly before!

SOME Diamonds Not a Girl’s Best Friend [via Tom Cacciatore
THIS IS NOT A PYTHON!
This is a 15 foot Western Diamondback
rattlesnake - the largest ever caught on record,
This snake was found Near the St. Augustine
outlet, in a new KB homes subdivision just south of
Mesa Az.
A little research revealed the following:
One bite from a snake of this sizewould contain enough venom to
kill over 40 full grown men.
The head of this snake alone is larger than the hand of a
normal sized man.
A bite from those fangs would be comparable to being stabbed
by two curved, 1/4 inch diameter screwdrivers.
The knife being used to draw out the fangs for the bottom
picture has a blade around 6 inche long.
This snake is estimated to have weighed over 170 pounds.
(How much do you weigh?)
Notice the girth of this snake as compared to the cop's
leg in the first picture (and he is not a small man).
A snake of this size could easily swallow a 2 year-old
child and dogs, pigs, etc).
A snake this size has an approximately 5 1/2 foot
accurate striking distance.
(The distance for an average size rattlesnake
is about 2 feet . )
This snake has probably been alive since George Bush Sr.
was President.
